The Department of State Services (DSS) on Tuesday, said it had received the order granting the leaders of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Mr. Ibraheem el-Zakzaky leave to travel to India for medical treatment.

Spokesman for the DSS, Mr. Peter Afunanya, who disclosed this in a statement in Abuja, said the secret police was liaising with relevant stakeholders to ensure compliance.

He said conformity with the order was in line with the service’s avowed commitment to the rule of law inherent in democracy.

It would be recalled that Kaduna State High Court, on Monday, granted El-Zakzakky leave to seek medical attention in India.

Justice Darius Khobo, while granting the leave, said El-Zakzakky should travel in company of state officials and return immediately after his discharge from the hospital to stand trial.

El-Zakzaky is standing trial in another court for alleged culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of public peace, among other charges.

El-Zakzaky who has been in custody since 2015 following a clash involving his followers and the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai in Zaria, secured freedom on Monday after a Kaduna High Court granted his wish for medical attention in India.
