18 political parties nominate 1.5m agents for polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said that the 18 registered political parties enlisted a total of 1,574,301 polling unit agents for the general election.

A document released by the commission yesterday showed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leads the pack with followed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) with 176,588, APC 176,233, while the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Labour Party (LP) have 176,200, and 134,874 polling agents respectively.

All the political parties also nominated a total 68,057 collation agents and 27 agents for the National Collation Centre.

Nigeria has 176,846 polling units but elections would only take place in 176,606 as 240 of the total figure have no registered voters according to INEC.

In terms of state, Kano has the highest number of party polling unit agents – 145,393 from three political parties of APC, PDP and NNPP; followed by Lagos with 98,646 from the three political parties; and Rivers, 79,795.

Meanwhile, data from the commission showed that Lagos top nine other states with the highest number of voters.

The figures are as follows:

Lagos – 7,060,195 registered voters

Kano – 5,921,370 registered voters

Kaduna – 4,335,208 registered voters

Rivers – 3,537,190 registered voters

Katsina – 3,516,719 registered voters

Oyo – 3,276,675 registered voters

Delta – 3, 221,697 registered voters

Plateau – 2,789,528 registered voters

Benue – 2,777, 727 registered voters

Bauchi – 2,749,268 registered voters
