The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the result of the 2017 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) showing that a total number of 923,486 candidates, out of 1,559,162 who sat for the examination obtained credit passes in Mathematics and English.
The head of national office, WAEC, Mr. Olu Adenipekun, said in Lagos at a press briefing that the figure, which represents 59.22 per cent, is an improvement on the percentage of school candidates who obtained credit passes in Mathematics and English in the 2015 and 2016.
While 38.68 per cent obtained credit passes in Mathematics and English in 2015, he said the percentage for 2016 was 52.97 per cent.
However, he said the results of 214, 952 candidates, representing 13.79 per cent in the 2017 WASSCE, were being withheld.
“Out of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination, 1,471,151 candidates, representing 94.36 per cent, have their results fully processed and released, while 95,734 candidates, representing 5.64 per cent, have a few of their subjects still being processed due to errors traceable to the candidates in the course of registration or writing the examination.
“Such errors are being corrected by the Council to enable the affected candidates get their results fully processed and released.”
He said 1,567,016 candidates registered for the examination, out of which 1,559,162 candidates took the examination.
Of the total number of candidates who wrote the examination, he said 829,853 were males and 729,309 were females, representing 53.22 per cent and 46.27 per cent respectively.
He further said with the upgrade of the Council’s ICT facilities, the capability of the Council’s ICT has now been enhanced.
“With the progressive review of our processes and procedures backed with the determination of the entire work force of the Council in Nigeria to serve the Nigerian Child better and faster, the early release of the results of the WASSCE for school candidates, 2017,has been made possible,” he said.
Thereafter, Adenipekun announced that the conduct of the first additional WASSCE diet for private candidates would begin between January and February 2018.
