As global cases exceed 15m
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) yesterday confirmed 576 new cases of COVID-19 in the country, with national toll now put at 37,801.
The agency which announced this on its verified Twitter handle said the new cases were reported in 22 states including the FCT.
“576 new cases of #COVID19Nigeria; Lagos-88, Kwara-87, FCT-82, Plateau-62, Ondo-39, Enugu-28, Oyo-26, Taraba-24, Kaduna-20, Ebonyi-20, Edo-17, Cross River-16, Kano-14, Rivers-11, Ogun-10, Delta-9, Nasarawa-8, Osun-8, Katsina-3, Imo-2, Kebbi-1, Borno-1,” it wrote
As of the time of the update, the agency said there were 37,801 confirmed cases of the virus in the country with 15,677recoveries and 805 deaths.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that global coronavirus infections surged past 15 million on Wednesday with the pandemic gathering pace even as countries remain divided in their response to the crisis.
The total of 15,009,213 cases is at least triple the number of severe influenza illnesses recorded annually, according to World Health Organisation data, while the death toll of more than 616,000 in seven months is close to the upper range of yearly influenza deaths.
The global tally reached the grim new milestone after India, which has the third largest number of infections in the world behind the United States and Brazil, reported almost 40,000 new cases in its daily update.
