The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi has elected to stand surety for the human rights lawyer, Mr Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi was yesterday granted bail by the chief magistrate of Ekiti Magistrate Court, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, in an alleged defamation case involving the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Mr Afe Babalola.
While granting the bail application by the defence counsel, Adeosun ordered Farotimi to provide a N30 million bond with two sureties who are responsible citizens of the country, with one of them being a house owner in Ado-Ekiti.
The court also barred Farotimi from granting media interviews or making comments on the issue pending the determination of the substantive suit in the court.
Besides, the court ordered him to surrender his passport.
Reacting to the bail conditions, Obi confirmed he was one of the two sureties.
The national coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, who disclosed this, said he consulted Obi who “as a respecter of rule of law, due process, and order he offered to take Dele Farotimi on the bail conditions.”
He also said Obi expressed his gratitude to the courts and others involved in the matter.
“He thanked our courts and all concerned on this matter. His concern is that the situation be resolved in the best interest of all parties and our legal system. He extended his sincere appreciation to all concerned,” Yunusa stated.
