Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi has felicitated Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems on winning the 67th Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance.
Tems secured the Grammy with her hit song Love Me Jeje, marking her second win after previously earning a Grammy for her contribution to Future’s chart-topping single Wait For U.
Recall that ‘Love me jeje’ is a Nigerian hip hop song made popular by US-based Nigerian recording artist Seyi Sodimu and released in 1997.
Writing on his X platform on Monday, Obi said he was delighted by Tem’s success.
He also lauded the contributions of other Nigerian artists who received Grammy nominations, emphasising the nation’s abundant talent pool that continues to earn global recognition.

“I am ever elated by the huge success Nigerian youths are making in various fields, especially in the entertainment sector.
“I like therefore to extend my hearty congratulations to our Nigerian Afrobeats star, Tems #temsbaby, who just secured her second Grammy Award with her win in the Best African Music Performance category.
“I also rejoice with Nigeria’s entertainment industry and other Nigerian artists who were nominated for different awards in their respective categories.
“Undoubtedly, Nigeria remains home to the endless flow of talents who through their creative arts, continue to put the nation on the global map.
“I firmly remain committed to building a nation that fosters growth among the youths and helps them discover and harness their individual talents for national productivity. A New Nigeria is Possible,” he said.
Similarly, Afrobeats musician, Mr David Adeleke, popularly called has celebrated Tems, saying he and his US-based R&B artiste, Mr Chris Brown, are proud of her.
“Congratulations to my one and only! #chrisbrown! And to the Queen @temsbaby, we are proud of you!” Davido wrote on his X handle.
Also reacting, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, popularly called Ayra Starr took to X to congratulate Tems, saying: “Temssbabyyyyyyy congratulations my love.”
The 67th Grammy Awards took place on Sunday at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, US.
The Best African Music Performance category was highly competitive, featuring Yemi Alade’s Tomorrow, Asake’s MMS, Chris Brown’s Sensational (featuring Davido & Lojay), and Burna Boy’s Higher. Notably, all the nominees were Nigerian artists, reinforcing the country’s dominance on the global music scene.
Receiving the award, Tems said: “Wow, dear God. Thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team.”
She also dedicated the award to her mother.
“Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday and this is her first Grammys. I just want to thank you ma because she has really done a lot for me and my brother.
“Happy birthday mum. And I want to thank my team. Muyiwa, Wale, my beautiful stylist, and lovely girls… I love you guys.
“Thank you so much. To God be the glory. Honestly, He has changed my life so much,” she added.
In 2023, she won the Best Melodic Rap Performance for the song ‘Wait For U’ with American hip-hop stars Future and Drake.
