Senate minority leader, Mr. Enyinnaya Abaribe caused a stir on the floor of the senate on Wednesday during a debate on insecurity when he called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign immediately over the worsening security situation in the country.
Abaribe who spoke in his contribution to the motion sponsored by the senate leader, Mr. Yahaya Abdullahi on national security said, said Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government had failed to address the security challenges in the country.
He said the president had been lying to Nigerians that Boko Haram had been defeated.
“Those who live on propaganda shall die by propaganda. Defeat is staring us on the face.
“Nigeria didn’t elect the inspector general of police. We didn’t elect other service chiefs.
“We elected the APC government in 2015. Nigerians elected President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and in 2019.
“As it is, we are facing the head of the Nigerian government and this is President Buhari.
“We are asking this government to resign because it can no longer perform its role,” Abaribe said.
He said the APC-led government has been surviving on propaganda while Nigerians who elected them into power have been suffocating and under siege.
The minority leader was, however, stopped by the senate president, Mr. Ahmed Lawan, who cautioned against the politicisation of the matter under discussion.
There was also uproar when the deputy president of the senate, Mr. Ovie Omo-Agege, in his contribution pposed the creation of state police on account of paucity of funds crippling the states and possible abuse by the state governors.
