Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, and the former minister of aviation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode on Friday, protested against the attempt by a joint team of soldiers, Department of State Services (DSS) and the police to arrest Mr. Sunday Adeyemo, popularly called Sunday Igboho.
It was gathered that Igboho was on his way to see Afenifere chieftain, Mr. Ayo Adebanjo in Lagos when the joint team, numbering about 40 ambushed him and wanted to arrest him on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
His supporters reportedly resisted the arrest as pandemonium ensued between them and the joint security team that attempted to apprehend him by force.
In a viral video, Igboho was seen with his men daring the security operatives and throwing expletives.
Commenting on the development, spokesman for Afenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin the security operatives would not have dared to arrest Igboho if he was a bandit.
“There is no sense in that (the attempted arrest). He (Igboho) is a free citizen of Nigeria. If they need him for any questioning, they should invite him not to go and waylay him on way like an armed robber.
“We condemn their attempt. There is no need for it. He has not been invited let alone not honouring the invitation. Chasing him on the road is condemnable.
“Sunday Igboho is not a bandit. Bandits are special under this administration. That is the difference between a bandit and a non-bandit in Nigeria today,” Odumakin stressed.
Also speaking, Fani-Kayode said he spoke with Igboho who confirmed that there was a violent attempt by a joint team of soldiers, DSS and the police to arrest him.
Fani-Kayode condemned the action of the security agents saying it would be very dangerous to do so.
He said if the security operatives wanted to see Igboho, all they needed to do was to simply invite him and not to lay ambush for him.
“I just spoke to my brother Sunday Igboho. He told me there was a violent attempt to arrest him this afternoon by a joint team of soldiers, DSS operatives and policemen numbering about 40 on the Ibadan/Lagos Expressway whilst he was on his way to see Baba Ayo Adebanjo in Lagos.
“I condemn this attempt to ambush and abduct him. It is not only reckless but also very dangerous.
“If the security agencies want to see him all they need to do is to invite him to their office. I am not aware of any crime that he has committed & I urge restraint on all sides,” he added.
