Former minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday emerged as the senate president of the 10th assembly.
Akpabio, representing Akwa Ibom Northeast, was anointed by the national working committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the preferred candidate alongside the senator representing Kano South, Mr. Jibrin Barau, who emerged as the deputy senate president.
The former governor of Zamfara, Mr. Abdulaziz Yari, ran with the chief whip of the ninth Senate, Mr. Orji Kalu, as his deputy.
According to Punch, when the clerk of the national assembly, Mr. Sani Tambuwal, who presided over the session, called for nominations, the senator-elect for Borno South, Mr. Ali Ndume, nominated Akpabio as senate president, while the senator-elect for Adamawa North, Mr. Elisha Abbo, nominated Yari.
After the lawmakers cast their votes in alphabetical order, two representatives of each team came to count their votes.
Senators Adeola Solomon and Ndume came out to represent Akpabio, while Abbo and the senator-elect representing Ondo South, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, represented Yari.
