A member of Akwa Ibom State secondary school governing board, Mr. Ofonmbuk Ukim has expressed his appreciation to the state governor, Mr. Udom Emanuel for considering him for the appointment.
Speaking in an interview with NewsGazette after his inauguration in Uyo recently, Ukim who said the team was constituted to advance the course of secondary school education in the state described his appointment as a “great honour.”
“I am immensely interested in the progress of secondary education in Akwa Ibom because no society functions effectively without a sound education policy,” he added.
Born in Ikot Akpabin in Ibesikpo Asutan local government area of Akwa Ibom State, Ukim started his public service career in 1992 when he was appointed education secretary in the defunct Ekpe Atai local government, overseeing the running of over 60 primary schools in that council.
In December 1996 during late Gen. Sani Abacha’s political transition programme, Ukim contested and won election into the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on the platform of the defunct UNCP.
Although they were all issued certificates of return, the election was set aside following Abacha’s sudden death.
In June 2004, Ukim was made Commissioner 2 in AKS local government service commission during the administration of former Governor Victor Attah.
Recently, he served out his tenure as board member of AKS scholarship board before Emmanuel reappointed him Commissioner 2 in AKS secondary school board.
A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ukim had served variously as the party’s national delegate, representing Ibesikpo Asutan at the PDP national conventions.
A member of the prestigious Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, a socio cultural organisation, Ukim is also the vice president of Uyo Town Old Boys’ Foundation.
He is married with children.
