The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Akwa Ibom State University chapter, has begun an indefinite strike to demand for better conditions of service.
It was learnt that the academic and non-academic workers of the institution had been subjected to salary payment on percentage basis for the past 11 months in addition to the lack of payment of promotion arrears.
In a statement issued yesterday by the institution’s ASUU chairman, Prof Otoabasi Akpan and secretary, Dr. Etanguno Owowo, the lecturers called on its members to withdraw all services, including teaching, administering examination or continuous assessment test in the institution.
“In view of our congress resolutions of December 14, 2020, which necessitated the issuance of the 14-day ultimatum to the university authorities, please take note that except otherwise notified by the branch leadership, members of ASUU, AKSU are hereby advised to abide by the stance of the congress.
“For purposes of clarity, all services of members have been withdrawn till further notice. For avoidance of doubt, these services include teaching, administration of examination(s) or continuous assessment(s); grading of examination scripts; supervision of projects, attendance of meeting of the university committee, departmental board, faculty board and the university senate.
“Any ASUU-AKSU member found on campus is expected to join in the full enforcement of the congress’ resolutions. Needless to emphasise that anyone that undermines the congress’ resolutions in this regard shall be doing so to his or her own peril,” the union stated.
