The Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (NATCA) has given voice to its fear about poor communication between the controller and pilot and between controller and controller at the Kano and Lagos area control centres (ACCs).
Speaking at the association’s 45th annual general meeting held in Jos, Plateau State, the president of NATCA, Mr. Victor Eyaru called for the declaration of a state of emergency at the two control centres to resolve the intractable problem.
He said poor communication had becoming a nightmare to both pilots and air traffic controllers.
Eyaru said solving the communication challenge would save the country any form of embarrassment that may result from the current state of affairs.
While acknowledging that Nigeria was going through a recession, Eyaru pointed out that certain critical infrastructure that will ensure efficient service delivery should not be ignored.
Thereafter, he called on the federal government to rebuild the control towers at the Kaduna and Maiduguri airports which were razed by fire in 2014.
The NATCA president also commented on the state of the Abuja Airport runway saying “it has become a national embarrassment” and “deserves urgent and sincere attention.”
