Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court has granted N20m bail to Mr. Abdullahi Babalele, son-in-law to son-in-law to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the February 23 presidential election, Mr. Atiku Abubakar.
Justice Oweibo, who ruled on the bail application on Thursday, said the bail was with one surety in like sum.
The surety, he added, must be resident in Lagos.
The judge also granted N20 million bail each to Atiku’s lawyer, Mr. Uyiekpen Giwa-Osagie, and his brother, Erhunse, with one surety in like sum.
The judge held that the sureties must reside in Lagos and must also have landed property in the state.
While both defendants were given 14 days to perfect their bail conditions, the judge adjourned the cases to October 8 for trial.
It would be recalled that Justice Oweibo had yesterday ordered that Babalele be remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) till today, Thursday when his when his bail application was heard.
The defendant was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering. When the two counts were read to him, he pleaded not guilty.
