The former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa has been released from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) after spending more than four months there.
Spokesman for the secret police, Mr Peter Afunanya, said in a statement that the former EFCC chief regained freedom yesterday.
“DSS confirms release of former EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, a few hours ago (today 25th October, 2023),” Afunanya said in the statement.
Recall that Bawa was arrested on June 14 following his suspension from office.
A statement signed by the director of information in the office of the secretary to the government of the federation, Mr Willie Bassey, said Bawa’s suspension followed weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has approved the indefinite suspension from office of Mr. AbdulRasheed Bawa, CON, as the Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office. This follows weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him,” the statement said.
Bassey added that Bawa had been directed to ‘immediately handover the affairs of his office to the director, operations, in the commission, who will oversee the affairs of the office of the chairman of the commission, pending the conclusion of the investigation.”
Meanwhile, viral videos showed Bawa being received at his home in Abuja by elated members of his family after he was released late Wednesday.
