Council of state meeting kicks off, Gowon, Jonathan, Obasanjo in attendance

The maiden edition of the council of state meeting for 2023 chaired by President, Muhammadu Buhari has commenced at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.

Present are former Heads of State, General Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar as well as former President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to Punch, former President Olusegun Obasanjo is joining the hybrid meeting virtually as only about 14 governors are present both physically and virtually with some represented by their deputies.

Also present are the vice president, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, the attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, two former Chief Justices of Nigeria, amongst others.

The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, the CBN governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, and the inspector general of police, Mr. Usman Baba are also present to brief the council.

The senate president, Mr. Ahmad Lawan, and speaker of the house of representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, are also present.

The council of state is an organ of the Federal Government of Nigeria which advises the executive on key policy making.

It comprises the president as chairman, vice president (deputy chairman), all living former presidents and heads of state, the president of the senate, speaker of the house of representatives,  all the 36 state governors and minister of justice and attorney-general of the federation.
