Justice Zainab Abubakar of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday granted the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) the request to further detain the suspended deputy commissioner of police, Mr. Abba Kyari for 14 days.
The court also gave order hold Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus for 14 days in the NDLEA facility in Abuja pending investigation.
NDLEA’s director, prosecution and legal services, Mr. Joseph Sunday, had before moving the ex-parte application, withdrew an earlier one filed only in respect of Umeibe and Alphonsus.
Kyari was arrested last week by the police and handed over to the NDLEA hours after he was declared wanted by the agency for alleged drug trafficking.
Prior to the arrest, he was suspended from the police after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had declared him wanted over his association with internet fraudster Ramon Abbass (aka Hushpuppi).
Kyari was alleged to have (abused the instruments of the state entrusted to him by privately punishing Hushpuppi’s criminal associates.
The suspended police officer had sued the federal government challenging his continued detention by the NDLEA but Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday refused to grant the request.
