Dana Air has embarked on its fleet expansion plan with the acquisition of a Boeing 737-33 aircraft series.

The new aircraft marked 5N-DNA was welcomed on arrival at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2, Lagos at the weekend by a ceremonial water canon salute by the aerodrome and fire-fighting unit of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

Speaking during the baptism of the aircraft, the chief operating officer of Dana Air, Mr. Obi Mbanuzuo said the journey to the acquisition of the equipment had been slow and steady and thanked the management and financial backers.

He said the aircraft has a capacity of 143 passengers adding that “we have not yet completed the configuration.

Mbanuzuo also said the second Boeing aircraft with registration number 5N-DNB would arrive in Nigeria in few weeks.

He said the aircraft is fully owned by the airline and assured that before the end of the year the airline would take more delivery of additional equipment.

“Dana Air celebrated 10 years of operation last year. For the past four years, we have been talking about fleet renewal. Every time the issues came up, there was one defence or the other, starting from what we went through some years ago.

He said the acquisition of the B737 aircraft was part of its fleet expansion plan which would enable it open more routes.

“We are always slow and steady in Dana Air; we like to do our things methodically. We don’t open routes just like that but we take our time and on the recommencement of our West Coast routes, we have that as a plan maybe from 2020 upwards but for now we are concentrating on serving the Nigerian routes,” he said

On the choice of a Boeing aircraft, the chief operating officer said: “Currently, the Boeing aircraft is the most popular passenger aircraft in Nigeria. Dana Air went through a long road in this and we have had it as a plan for a long time but it was staggered due to economic and other realities. But now we are here,” he added.
