The police in Delta State have taken young nursing mother into custody for allegedly throwing her 10-month old child, Prevail, into a river in Aviara, Isoko South area council of the state.

The woman identified as Blessing Jonathan, was said to have committed the offence on October 31.

According to a report by The Nation newspaper, the suspect attributed her action to anger borne out mockery by her friends and other women that the child has no father.

Unsettled and angered by their uncharitable remarks, Blessing resolved to throw the baby into a river.

The report said the act was not discovered immediately as the police only received the report of a missing baby early in December after a corpse was seen floating in the river.

On retrieving the corpse, it was discovered to have been that of the missing baby.

Confessing to the crime, the suspect said she did not know what came over her when she took the action.

The spokesperson for the police command, Bright Edafe,  said Blessing would be charged to court after a thorough investigation of the case.
