The representative of Kogi West in the senate, Mr. Dino Melaye has declared his intention to vie for the governorship of Kogi State in the election slated for November 16.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker made the declaration on Saturday during a meeting of Kogi West executives of the party held at Maj. Gen David Jemibewon’s Ayetoro country home on Saturday.
Melaye while soliciting the support of the party executives, expressed optimism of emerging the next governor of the state.
Spokesman for the senator, Mr. Gideon Ayodele, who confirmed the development said the party leaders at the meeting asked others interested in the race to inform them within two weeks to enable the party screen them and prepare for the primary election.
It would be recalled that Melaye defeated Mr. Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 23 national assembly election.
With his declaration, Melaye has joined the other PDP aspirants eyeing the job of the incumbent governor, Mr. Yahaya Bello of the APC.
Bello is also being challenged from within by some stalwarts of the party including a former Chief of Naval Staff, Jibril Usman and Yahaya Audu, a brother to a former governor of the state, late Prince Abubakar Audu.
