The senate has confirmed Mr. Godwin Emefiele as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for a second term of five years.

The confirmation followed consideration of the report of the Senator Rafiu Ibrahim-led banking, insurance and other financial institutions which screened the governor on Wednesday.

It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had recommended Emefiele to the senate for confirmation.

A letter to the senate seeking Emefiele’s confirmation was read out by the senate president, Dr. Bukola Saraki at the plenary on May 9.

In the letter, Buhari said he sought the confirmation by the senate pursuant to the provisions of Section 81(2) of the CBN Act, 2007.

He said the CBN governor’s first tenure will expire on June 2 adding that said the CBN governor’s reappointment will be for a second and final term of five years.

The president expressed his hope that the request would receive “the usual expeditious consideration of the Senate.”

Emefiele, 57, was the group managing director of Zenith Bank Plc before he was appointed in 2014 by the former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
