The minister of industry, trade and investment, Mr. Okechukwu Enelamah has challenged the Standards Organisatiion of Nigeria (SON) to use its technical skills and competence it acquired over the years to develop the economy.
Speaking at the end of the 2017 SON management retreat held in Lagos at the weekend, Enelamah who was represented by the minister of state for industry, trade and investment, Hajia Aisha Abubakar also tasked the organization to use such skills to help Nigeria to get out of the current economic recession.
“You need to bring these to bear on your service delivery to Nigerians particularly in promoting the diversification of the nation’s economy,” said the minister.
The minister assured SON that the federal government would continue to provide the necessary support and encouragement through the ministry of industry, trade and investment to serve Nigerians diligently.
He called on the management of the organisation to be the facilitator and positive change agent that could emerge in 2017.
Also speaking at the retreat, the director general of SON, Mr. Osita Aboloma described the retreat’s theme of ‘Repositioning for Better Performance’ as “very relevant” and expressed optimism that the staff were better positioned to deliver as ambassadors of standards.
He said he was confident that the staff would make use of the knowledge garnered during the retreat to improve their performance so as to get Nigeria out of the economic recession.
Aboloma further said SON, with the collaboration of sister agencies had done well thus far.
He said the job of checkmating substandard products was not an easy one but something requiring consistency and concerted effort.
“This is why I implore Nigerians, if you see something say something. At the end of the day, we must get it right as a nation,” added.
