Staff of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), have commended the managing director and chief executive of the agency, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku for her achievements during her first year in the saddle.
Speaking at the ‘MD’s Quarterly Award for Excellence’ presentation held at FAAN headquarters in Lagos, the director for special duties, Mr Henry Agbebire, said the occasion was also meant to “honour a significant milestone”, which, according to him “is the attainment of one year of dedicated service by Mrs Kuku whose visionary leadership has been instrumental in transforming the FAAN into a model of operational excellence.”
He said under Kuku’s leadership, FAAN achieved much in safety, security and passenger facilitation.
Also speaking, the general manager, safety, Mr John Ekpe said the managing director’s commitment “has helped to ensure that safety is prioritised at all levels of the organization’s operations.”
Ekpe listed the establishment of safety culture, clear formal safety policy, regulatory compliance, adequate safety training, accountability and engagement in continuous improvement as some of Kuku’s achievements.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Kuku commended FAAN workers for “being the force behind the success.”
“It is not just the work we have done but the spirit we have done it well together,” she added.
She also announced that the agency was doing a lot to bring about improvements on the landside and airside of the Lagos airport.
“For the airside, all the safety initiatives are ongoing, making sure we are returning our major airports to category two.
“In terms of actual landside and terminal equipment, we are working really around the automation and a lot of things that we have, making sure we are improving the passengers experiences, upgrading our terminal in our secondary as well as our main airports,” she said.
Kuku added: As you pass through the airport this festive season, you will see there are lots of improvements. The aviobridges, conveyor belts will be coming in next year.
“We are fully committed to providing the same level of service you get internationally.
The high point of the event was the presentation of the managing director’s awards to deserving FAAN staff as well as the launch of ‘Occupational safety and health manual and aerodrome general safety handbook’.
