The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced late Tuesday temporary closure of Runway 18R/36L at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos.
Spokeswoman for the agency, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu said in a statement that the action was taken following a landing incident involving a Boeing 737 aircraft marked 5N SYS, and flight number ZQ2325.
She said the aircraft had a tyre burst after landing on this runway.
She added that “all passengers and crew on board the aircraft were safely evacuated at 1908 hours, and officials of FAAN Air Rescue and Fire Fighting Services, Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) and Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) Plc are already working to ensure the aircraft is towed out of the runway, so as to restore normalcy.”
It was also learnt that the aircraft which was coming from Abuja overshot the runway at the domestic terminal while trying to touch down at the airport, after the aircraft tyres burst on landing.
It was further gathered that the incident caused blockage thereby stopping other airlines from flying and causing cancellation of flights of several airlines.
