Justice Oluremi Oguntoyibo of the Federal
High Court, Lagos has ordered the remand of four men charged with producing
adulterated engine oil.
The four men are Messrs Johnson Uche, Olaide Shittu, Kingsley Meteke and
Abdulquadri Olayinka.
The judge who gave order yesterday said the men should be remanded in prison pending their arraignment.
Counsel to the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) Mr. Adeleke Olofindare said the defendants and others at large had on January 2 at 2, Esugbayi Street, NPA Quarters, Marine Bridge, Apapa, produced adulterated/substandard engine oil for public consumption.
It alleged that the defendants dealt
in 128 drums and 945 litres of substandard engine oil, which they allegedly
sold to unsuspecting motorists.
It said the products, which the defendants claimed to buyers was of high quality, “failed to comply with SON Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP).”
He said the accused acted contrary to Section 1 (18) (ii) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act of 2004 and were liable to be punished under Section 26 of the SON Act of 2015.
The defendants could not be arraigned because their lawyer was absent.
Olofindare therefore prayed the court to remand the accused in prison.
Justice Oguntoyibo ordered their remand adjourned to March 1 for arraignment.
He also directed that the next date be communicated to the defence counsel in writing, while evidence of such writing should be made available to the court.
