The managing director and chief executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, expressed concern about the prevailing situation where passengers are exploited and harassed at the airports.
Speaking in an interview in Lagos, Kuku however said the agency had taken drastic steps to eliminate unwholesome practices including extortion, touting and all other and illicit activities at the airports.
She said she was committed to creating a seamless and pleasant experience for travelers.
Consequently, she said FAAN had set up a task force as well as embarked on an extensive campaign to crack down on unlawful practices at the gateways.
To drive the initiative, Kuku announced the appointment of FAAN’s director of special duties, Mr Henry Agbebire as the chairman of the task force.
She mandated the task force to enforce discipline among airport staff and maintain a culture of professionalism at all levels.
She has also declared her intention to personally engage with all the government agencies operating at the airports to ensure compliance with the anti-touting and anti-extortion measures.
She warned all the airport personnel, including FAAN staff that strict disciplinary actions would be taken against anyone found engaging in illicit practices.
She stressed that the era of business as usual was over and highlighted the administration’s zero-tolerance for misconduct.
The managing director further announced plans to establish magistrate courts at international airports to expedite the legal process for prosecuting offenders.
“In addition, dedicated phone lines and QR codes will be set up to provide passengers with a means of providing feedback on their airport experience.
“All airport personnel must prominently display their on-duty cards and name tags for easy identification and accountability.
“FAAN is committed to delivering exceptional service and ensuring a safe and secure environment for all passengers and airport users,” she stressed.
