Majority leader of the house of representatives, Mr. Alhassan Doguwa, was on Wednesday remanded in prison after a five-count charge including culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, mischief by fire, and inciting public disturbance was pressed against him.
Doguwa was arraigned before a Senior Magistrate Court sitting in Kano by the Kano State Commissioner of Police following his arrest on Wednesday at the Aminu Kano International Airport on his way to board a flight to Abuja.
The court presided over by Magistrate Ibrahim Yola remanded the lawmaker in prison till March 7, 2023 when the case comes up.
According to the first information report, Doguwa was alleged to have conspired with one Bashir Dahiru and five others now at large to breach public peace in Tudun-Wada local government area by setting ablaze the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) office which led to the death of one Alhassan Sarki Pawa and Aminu Malam.
It added that the house leader was found in possession of a gun with which he allegedly shot one person dead and injured many others
The defence counsel, Mr. Abdul Adamu prayed the court to grant the defendant bail on self recognition.
He stated that the defendant would not jump bail, tamper with police investigation and would provide reasonable surety to stand for him.
However, the prosecutor, Ms Aisha Salisu, objected to the bail application saying one of the charges is a capital offence.
She said the lawmaker shot one Ibrahim Dauda to death and injured many others.
“The defendants conspired with five others now at large and conducted themselves in a manner to cause a breach of public peace and burnt the office of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Tudun Wada Dankadai,” she told the court.
“Two persons lost their lives at the said NNPP office, while six persons sustained various injuries.”
The presiding magistrate, after hearing arguments from both sides on the bail application, adjourned the case to March 7.
