President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Abubakar Adamu Mohammed Lafia as the acting inspector-general of police.
Lafia’s appointment followed the retirement of Mr. Ibrahim Idris who is expected to bow out of service today after attaining the retirement age of 60.
It was learnt that Lafia was selected by the president among three names submitted to him after weeks of shopping for Idris’ replacement.
The acting IGP who serves at the Nigerian Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos, had served as AIG Zone 5, Benin, Edo State.
He was a director of peacekeeping operations and is a former police commissioner in Enugu State and deputy commissioner in Ekiti State police Command.
Lafia who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geography was born on November 9, 1961 and enlisted in the police in 1986.
It was also gathered that no fewer than seven deputy inspectors general of police and a number of assistant inspectors general are expected to be retired when Lafia’s appointment is announced today.
New Telegraph reports that the deputy inspectors general who are likely to leave service include the DIGs in charge of department of finance and administration, Mr. Maigari Abbati Dikko, department of operations, Mr. Habila Joshak and his counterpart in the department of information and communication technology (ICT), Mr. Emmanuel T. Inyang.
Others are the DIG, department of logistics and supply, Mr. Agboola Oshodi-Glover; the head of department of research and planning, Mr. Musa Katsina Muhammed; department of training and development, Mr. Mohammed Sani Usman and that of Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation, Mrs. Peace Ibekwe-Abdallah.
It would be recalled that when Idris was appointed on March 21, 2016 as a replacement for Mr. Solomon Arase, seven DIGs – Danazumi Doma, Sotonye Wakama, and Mamman Tsafe. Others were Kakwe Tsatso; Hashimu Argungu; Jubril Adeniji and Chintua Amajor-Onuwere retired.
Similarly, AIGs Bala Hassan, Yahaya Ardo, Irmiya Yarima, Danladi Mshebwala, Tambari Mohammed, Bala Magaji Nasarawa, Musa Abdulsalam, Adisa Bolanta and Mohammed Gana were retired.
Others were Umaru Manko; Lawal Tanko; Olufemi Adenike; Johnson Ogunsakin; Adenrele Shinaba; James Caulcrick; Olufemi Ogunbayode; Edgar Nanakumo; Kalafite Adeyemi; Patrick Dokumor; Joseph Mbu and Sabo Ringim.
