The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that a rerun of the Kano governorship election will hold in 234 across 30 local government areas of the state where votes were cancelled during the first ballot on March 9.
The commission said the 234 Polling units are scattered 88 registration areas (wards) in the affected local government areas.
It would be recalled that INEC cancelled 141,694 votes in about 196 polling units, citing cases of over voting, violence and card reader failure.
The cancelled areas also include 62 polling units of Gama ward in Nasarawa local government area where the police arrested the deputy governor of the state, Mr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, his ADC, the commissioner for local government, Mr. Mutari Sule Garo, and the chairman of Nasarawa local government area, Mr. Lamin Sani for allegedly destroying result sheets.
The returning officer for the governorship election in Kano, Prof. Bello B. Shehu had disclosed that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Abba Kabiru Yusuf polled 1,04,747 votes, far above the incumbent governor and candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje who scored 987,909 votes, a margin of 26,565 votes.
But Prof. Shehu who declared the election inconclusive posited that such condition became pertinent when the number of cancelled votes is more than the winning margin.
