The Nigerian Army has taken delivery of a consignment of modern weapons and ammunition to boost its counter-insurgency war and other internal security operations in the country.
The weapons which arrived aboard a Boeing 727 cargo aircraft belonging to Aquiline International, landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Monday and was received the head of Nigerian army operations monitoring tea, Brig. Gen. Robert Aiyenigba.
Aiyenigba told journalists at the airport that the delivery was the first in a series of weapons and ammunition to be delivered soon to the Nigeria Army.
He said the Slovak-made weapons were procured mainly to boost the capabilities of troops fighting insurgency in the North East and banditry in other parts of the country.
Although he was silent on the types of weapons, it was however gathered that they included long-range artillery weapons, latest arms and ammunition for infantry ground operations and weapons for special forces to enable them conduct night and suicide offensives.
The army is currently involved in several operations including Operation Lafiya Dole, Hard Strike, Whirl Stroke, Sharan Daji, Yancin Tafki among many others.
