Approves free registration for PLWDs
The Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) said the registration for the 2024/2025 Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) begins today (Monday), January 15 and ends on February 24, 2024.
The board also accredited 747 CBT centres for the exam, up from 613 approved centres in 2023.
The JAMB Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, said at a press briefing in Lagos yesterday that adequate measures would be taken ensure a smooth exercise.
“Prior to the commencement of the registration exercise, the Board conducts an accreditation exercise to check the suitability of each computer-based test (CBT) centre for the conduct of its examination,” he said.
Oloyede noted that members of the accreditation team of the CBT centres for the 2024 UTME included the chief external examiners (vice chancellors/rectors/provosts), technical advisors, jamb state coordinators and JAMB technical officers.
As contained in the presentation by the exam body to the relevant stakeholders, part of the procedures for the registration is that candidates are expected to create a profile through the National Identity Number (NIN) at various CBT centres across the country.
To register, candidates are also expected to generate their profile with the use of either JAMB USS codes 55019 or 66019.
The registrar, however, warned that “only one sort code is allowed to avoid multiple charges.”
This, Oloyede said, is compulsory for candidates, as a unique verification tool to thumbprint to end the registration exercise.
According to the procedure, the registration fee is N3,500 and the payment will be cashless to avoid any extortion.
Meanwhile, a document revealed that JAMB accredited 747 CBT centres for the examination as against the 613 approved centres in 2023.
Lagos tops the list of states with the highest number of accredited centres with 80, followed by Ogun with 44 while Oyo takes the third position with 42 centres.
Zamfara has the lowest number of accredited centres – 6, while both Ebonyi and Kebbi States had 8 centres each.
Oloyede also announced that Persons Living With Disability (PLWDs) who wish to write UTME 2024/2025 can register at no cost.
He said the board would issue free application documents to all categories of Persons Living With Disability as a form of support.
“To support the PLWD, JAMB will issue free application documents to all categories of Persons Living with Disabilities in the advertisement for the 2024 UTME/DE,” he said.
The registrar said the development was a digital adaptation of the traditional reading book, noting that it will come in popular audio formats such as MP3, WMV, and WMA which will be compatible with all devices that can stream audio records.
He said the suggestion for the provision of audio books was made at the first National Conference on Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education in Nigeria.
Apart from the visually impaired candidates, other groups to benefit from the free registration according the registrar are people with Down syndrome, Autism, Dyslexia disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
