The governor of Kano State, Mr. Abdullahi Ganduje has ordered state Anti-Corruption Commission to begin investigation into the case of a missing N6.8 million that was allegedly swallowed by a gorilla.
The money was realised from gate during visits to Kano Zoological Gardens during the last Sallah celebration
“Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State orders the state Anti-Corruption Commission to probe the issue of Kano Zoological Gardens story of alleged swallowing of N6.8 million by a gorilla in the zoo.
“The order was given on Friday by the governor and the Commission swings into action immediately after the issuance of the order.
“He asked the Commission to look into the immediate and remote cause of the allegation, directing them to unearth everything surrounding the incident,” said the chief press secretary to the governor, Mr. Abba Anwar, in a statement
It would be recalled that an accounts officer at the zoo had claimed that gorilla sneaked into an office where the money was kept and then proceeded to ‘swallow’ the money.
The managing director of Kano Zoo, Mr. Umar Kashekobo, also confirmed that money was missing.
“Police are investigating what happened – all I can say is money is missing,” he said.
For their part, the police also confirmed the disappearance of money from the zoo.
“Yes, it is true that money from five days of Sallah festivities is missing from the Kano zoo.
“As at now, we have arrested 10 members of staff of the zoo including the security man and those working in the finance unit,” spokesman for the state police command, Mr. Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, told the BBC.
