Ganduje gives assent
The Kano State House of Assembly, on Wednesday, passed the Bill for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs into law.
The bill paves the way for the decentralisation of the Kano Emirate council and creates four additional first class emirates.
The additional first class emirates include Rano, Gaya, Karaya and Bichi.
With the development, Kano now has five emirates but the domain of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi 11, has been reduced thus whittling down his influence
In a motion presented to the House by the majority leader Mr. Baffa Danagundi, the House unanimously agreed that the creation of more emirates will assist in job creation, dispute, and community conflict resolutions among others.
Earlier, a committee was constituted by the House to decentralise and create four more first class emirs, following a petition written by some legal practitioners.
According to the petition, the establishment of the emirates would facilitate more development to the people, as well as provide security in the respective areas.
Reading the joint committees’ report on the floor of the House on Tuesday, Danagundi said the report also recommended the review of the law.
He said the decision to pass the bill into law followed wide consultation with stakeholders, adding that the feedback the committee received from the public was overwhelming and impressive.
Meanwhile, the state governor, Mr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has given assent to the bill
He kept to his earlier promise that he would sign the bill into law soon as it is passed by the House.
“We heard about a Bill forwarded to the State House of Assembly, requesting them to enact a law for the creation of four more emirs in Kano.
“We believe those that did this did it with good intention. And they want the development of the state.”
Furthermore, Ganduje disclosed that the idea had been in the state, among citizens, for a long time.
“The effort did not scale through those years, but now, we are happy to see that the idea would come into fruition,” he had said.
He had argued that creating more emirates would bring about improvements in all sectors of the society.
“It will also lead to more concentration on our health, education and other equally important sectors of the society.
“That is why I said there will be no waste of time in signing the Bill into law,” he added.
