The Kano State house of assembly on Thursday abolished all the four newly emirate councils created by the former governor, Mr Abdullahi Ganduje.
The development followed a special session held by the lawmakers on the floor of the house presided over by the speaker, Mr Jibrin Falgore.
The repeal, subject to assent by the state governor, Mr Abba Yusuf, set aside the four emirates created in 2019 and restored Kano as the only state with a single emirate council, aside from Sokoto which also has only the Sultan as the paramount ruler.
The scrapped emirates are Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye, which each have first class emirs.
The decision means that all offices created under the repealed law have been dissolved, and district heads appointed or elevated under the law are to revert to their former positions.
The Kano State Emirates Council Amendment Bill was considered on the floor of the House after scaling second and third reading on Thursday morning.
The deputy speaker, Mr Muhammad Butu, had earlier explained that repealing the law would revive the lost glory of Kano as the division of Kano emirate to five reduced the capacity and dignity of the state at national level.
The majority leader, Mr Lawan Dala, said the emirate council served as a custodian of culture which was distorted by the creation of the four additional emirates.
With the amendment of the law, all four new emirate councils were abolished leaving only the Kano Emirate.
The house also adopted a motion to create a new second-class emirate council in the state.
Recall that the house of assembly had in 2019 passed an executive bill that split the state into five emirates through the creation of four new emirates.
The exercise suffered a temporary setback when the state high court nullified it and the appointment of its emirs.
But the then governor, Ganduje, sent a fresh bill to the lawmakers who again approved the creation of the four new emirates with first-class emirs.
The action was seen as a move by Ganduje to whittle down the influence of the former Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, who had a running battle with the governor over the emir’s alleged political interference and insubordination.
On March 9, 2020 Sanusi was dethroned on the grounds of insubordination, and he was replaced by Aminu Ado-Bayero, who was transferred from Bichi emirate to Kano.
