There are conflicting reports that a building located at 57, Egerton Street, Oke Arin, Lagos collapsed on Monday and killed many people.
The tragedy is coming barely one week after a building collapsed at Ita Faji, Lagos Island, killing 20 persons, including school children.
It was learnt that officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency were demolishing another house beside the building when the incident happened.
The director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaki Musbau, who confirmed the incident, said firefighters from the Sari Iganmu division had been deployed in the area.
Spokesman for the Lagos State police command Mr. Bala Elkana, said the police was yet to be informed.
“But I am aware that Lagos State is demolishing some houses,” he added.
The head of public affairs unit, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Kehinde Adebayo, said the agency had received multiple calls from the area informing them of the situation.
He, however, said no details had emerged yet, as the agency’s officials were on their way to the area.
However, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) denied that another building had collapsed saying its men were the ones demolishing buildings.
Spokesman for LABSCA, Ms. Titi Ajirotutu said the building had already been demolished by LABSCA.
She said a scavenger was injured in the process of carting away door steel and other materials.
“We had reported that another building was reported to have collapsed in Oke Arin area in Lagos Island,” she said.
