The principal medical director of Gubio General Hospital, Borno State, Dr. Geidam Bulama, who was abducted March 2022 by the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists, has been released.
Bulama was abducted in 2022 when ISWAP attacked Gubio Local Government Area which is about 70kms from Maiduguri.
A counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad Region, Zagazola Makama, reported that during the abduction of Bulama, the insurgents had promised his wife that they would not kill him.
Sources said the insurgents took Bulama and other abducted victims to the fringes of Lake Chad where he was forced to treat wounded fighters and their families for several months.
A source said efforts of the state government and the security agencies led to the release of Bulama.
Before his abduction, he was the only doctor covering the entire Gubio Local Government Area.
A source said Bulama was released in Gubio, before he was moved to Maiduguri where he was reunited with his family.
The source did not disclose if ransom was paid before his release or not.
