The international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos recorded 1, 252, 922 passenger traffic in the first half of 2017.
A breakdown of the figure shows that 691,934 were outbound passengers with 519, 215 Nigerians, majorly males and 179,739 foreigners while 560,988 were inbound travellers with 392,237 and 158,751 foreigners.
Also, during the period under review, the airport handled 4,281 Nigerians repatriated from some countries in Europe, America and Africa.
According to a document from the ministry of interior, the deportees were brought in by chartered and scheduled flights.
The document showed that between January and June, 2,251 Nigerians were deported through chartered flights majorly from Libya and a trickle of European countries.
A breakdown of those who came on chartered flights shows that 1,321 of the deportees were males while 930 were females.
Those who came aboard regular flights mainly from Europe, South Africa and a few African countries were 2,030, with a majority of them being males.
The document further shows that 1, 502 males and 528 females were deported during the period under review.
Newsgazette.com.ng gathered that those who were involved in criminal activities in their host countries were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further prosecution; those involved in drug related matters were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the airport while the others were handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
The document further revealed that in the first of the year, 691,954 passengers both Nigerians and foreigners used the facilities at MMIA to depart to various destinations from the country.
