The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) guards on duty at the international wing of the Murtala Muahammed Airport, Lagos, have foiled an attempt by a three-man gang specialising in digging and removing underground amoured cables at the airport.
Spokesman for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua, said in a statement that the alleged thieves were sighted digging up cables around the perimeter fence of the airport.
“On sighting the guards, they took to their heels. A guard however opened fire on them. Usman Musa, 28 years old, a native of Adamawa State, residing in Ijora sustained gunshot wounds. He was subsequently arrested,” he said.
He said two of Musa’s accomplices escaped.
He added that the suspect who was being treated at the General Hospital, Oyingbo “will be properly interrogated after he has stabilised.”
“The Authority believes that this incident could be a relevant clue to unravelling the theft of the Runway Lighting at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja,” the FAAN spokesman added.
