A Nigerian immigrant identified as Nonso was arrested on Christmas Eve for attempting to sell 265 grams of heroin worth Rs1.35 crore (N68.8million) in Chandigarh, capital of the northern Indian states of Punjab and Haryana.
A report published by the Times of India on Wednesday said the 21-year-old Nigerian was arrested in Zirri Mandi Chowk, a district in Punjab, by a police vehicle patrolling the area.
The state police inspector, Amanjot Singh, said preliminary investigations revealed that Nonso came to Chandigarh to sell illicit drugs for the Christmas and New Year celebration.
He added that Nonso had found out that the city had potential buyers during this time.
The police inspector also said Nonso confessed to have procured the drugs from another Nigerian who lives in Uttam Nagar, Delhi.
It would be recalled that NewsGazette reported on December 18 that Indian police apprehended a Nigerian national alongside two Indians for illegal possession of illicit drugs worth Rs50 crore (N2.6 billion) in Dehli.
The police identified the accused as Christ Jole, 28, a Nigerian national; Anubhav Dushad, 35, and Renuka 27, both Indians.
