The president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Ayuba Wabba has said that there was no going back on the nationwide strike beginning September 28 following the failure of the federal government to reverse the hike in electricity tariff and fuel pump price.
It would be recalled that the federal government had in early September hiked the price of petrol from N138 per litre to N151 per litre, saying it had withdrawn subsidy on petroleum products.
The decision was taken one day after the electricity distribution companies (DisCos) had also increased electricity tariff.
The organised Labour had rejected the hike and threatened to shut down the economy if the federal government refused to reverse the recent hike in petrol price and electricity tariff on or before September 28.
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) last Monday issued a seven-day ultimatum to the federal government to reverse the increase of face strike.
The ultimatum expires today (Tuesday, September 22) and there are indications that the TUC may have started mobilising for strike.
Speaking after the after the national executive council meeting of the union held in Abuja on Tuesday, Wabba condemned the timing of the increment and warned that failure to meet the demands would compel workers to go ahead with the protest.
