The national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Uche Secondus on Friday led some other leaders of the party, including its presidential aspirants to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja to protest against the outcome of the Osun State governorship election held on September 22 and a runoff on September 27.
Some of the PDP leaders were the senate president, Dr. Bukola Saraki, speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, governor of Sokoto State, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, former governor of Jigawa State and presidential aspirant, Mr. Sule Lamido and the representative of Kogi West senatorial district, Mr. Dino Melaye, among others.
The protesters who had earlier congregated at the national headquarters of the PDP in Abuja demanded that INEC declare the PDP candidate Mr. Ademola Adeleke as the winner of the Osun election.
The protesters wore T-shirts with the inscription ‘the Nigeria Police and INEC are arms of the All Progressives Congress.’
It would be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on September 23 declared the governorship election held election in the state the previous day as inconclusive because the difference between the two leading parties, the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC), was lower than the number of the votes cancelled.
After the collation of all the results from the 30 council areas of the state, Adeleke of the 254,698 votes while the APC candidate, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, polled 254,345.
INEC scheduled a rerun of the election in seven polling units across four council areas on Thursday, September 27.
At the end of polling that day, the returning officer, Prof. Joseph Fuwape, declared that the APC candidate, Oyetola, won the election by scoring a total number of 255,505 votes while Adeleke polled 255,023 votes.
