The governments of Rivers and Cross River states have expressed their readiness to pay the new minimum wage.
The Rivers State chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mrs. Beatrice Itubu said in a statement in Port Harcourt that the state government would no problem paying the consequential adjustments approved by the Federal Government.
She recalled that the state governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike had promised he would pay whatever amount that was agreed between the federal government and labour.
Similarly, Mr. Christian Ita, spokesman for the governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade, said the governor had assured that the government would pay the new wage and adjustments once the modalities were worked out.
Meanwhile, the state chairman of the NLC, Mr. Benedict Ukpepi, said there would be no downward review of the new minimum wage in the state.
Similarly, the Ondo State chapter of the NLC said the state government must adopt the formula agreed on by the federal government.
The chapter chairman, Mr. Sunday Adeleye said yesterday that the union had written to the state government on the issue.
“We have already written to the government and the last time I checked, the government did not tell us that they had low financial income. So, we are not going lower than what the federal government has agreed and our governor has not said the state does not have money to pay,” he said.
