Senate approves N242.2bn for 2019 elections

The senate has approved a total sum of N242, 245,050,100 billion for the funding of the 2019 general elections.

The approved sum is about N200, 272,500 million less than the N242, 445,322,600 requested by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The approval followed the recommendation by the senate committee on Appropriations which report on the budget was adopted at the plenary on Tuesday.

With the approval, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will now get N189 billion in addition to its 45.5 billion in the 2018 appropriation.

The senate also approved the sum of N53 billion for the office of the national security adviser and other security agencies to supervise general elections.

Other beneficiaries are the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

The senate maintained that the source of funding should be from the recurrent and capital components of the special intervention programme captured in the Service Wide Votes of the 2018 Appropriation Act.
