Officers of the 23 Armourd Brigade of the Nigerian Army on Saturday intercepted six mine resistant military vehicles in Konkol, a borderline village in Maiha local government area of Adamawa State, lying between Nigeria and Cameroon.
It was gathered that strange military vehicles believed to belong to USA were actually headed for the Republic of Niger.
Although the Nigerian Army could not immediately verify the ownership of the equipment, where they were being shipped from and their destination, the military high command in Abuja had directed an urgent investigation into the discovery as well as the handover of the vehicles to the Nigeria Customs Service.
NewsGazette learnt that the officers who intercepted the strange military vehicles had handed them over to the Nigerian Customs Service for further investigation.
The vehicles were said to have been received by customs area comptroller for Adamawa/Taraba command, Mr. Kamardeen Olumoh.
It could not be ascertained whether suspects had been arrested in connection with the illegal arms shipment.
It is illegal to import such equipment without an end-user certificate from the office of the national security adviser in Nigeria.
The development could further upset security agencies, which have continued to grapple with acute insecurity and violence across the country.
Security analysts regularly question how terrorists and other criminals acquire weapons they have used to keep the country under siege for many years, urging security and intelligence agencies to devote more time to understanding the complex web of illicit arms movement.
