The governor of Anambra State governor, Prof Charles Soludo has pleaded with the federal government to release the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr. Nnamdi Kanu to him as he was ready to sign a surety for him
Soludo made the declaration during the kickoff of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) campaigns at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka.
He said if the IPOB chief could not be released unconditionally, he was ready to stake his name to the bargain with the federal authorities.
The governor added that all kinds of methods had been deployed to ending insecurity in the southeast but to no avail.
He said insecurity in the region could not be well addressed without the release of the incarcerated IPOB leader.
“I am making a passionate appeal to the Federal Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally. If he cannot be released unconditionally, I want him be released to me and I will stand surety for him”
“We need Nnamdi Kanu in the roundtable conversation to discuss the insecurity in the southeast. We must end insecurity in the southeast and we need Nnamdi Kanu to be around. This issue of insecurity cannot be well addressed without bringing to the table the key players in this matter.
“We have applied the kinetic and non-kinetic approach to fighting insecurity in the southeast but the non-kinetic approach cannot be complete without the federal government releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”
Reacting to the governor’s gesture, Kanu’s family expressed gratitude to Soludo for standing up for their son.
Posting Soludo’s quote of appeal alongside a picture of the Anambra governor and the detained IPOB leader, Kanu’s elder brother Kanunta wrote in a post, “The Kanu family is grateful.”
Recall that Kanu was first arraigned on December 23, 2015, and was later granted bail on April 25, 2017.
He fled the country in September 2017 following the invasion of his house by the military in his Afara-Ukwu, Umuahia country home in Abia State.
He was re-arrested in Kenya in June 2021 and brought back to Nigeria where he has been standing trial for treason since then.
