Saturday, October 29, 2016 was a day of joy for The Apostolic Church, Victoria Island Assembly as it dedicated its ultra-modern church auditorium.
Located at 44A, Oba Elegushi Street, Lekki, the church which is in Ajah Area under the Lagos and Western/Northern Areas Territory (LAWNA), also serves as is a district centre.
In his speech, the pastor of the church who also doubles as the district apostle, Monday Akpan thanked God for providing a land with well-defined boundaries for the construction of the edifice.
He said the church moved to the permanent site on January 14, 2001 adding “we started full worship on this land under canopies” and had to contend with the wind which would disrupt church services by blowing off the covering.
“I saw the arduous task before me, especially what I witnessed about the windy effect on the service. With the menace of the wind on the canopies and the financial implications of having to rent about 12 canopies every Sunday to complement the 30-foot long canopy that was constructed we had to think of raising a structure with permanent roof over our heads,” he said.
He said with various methods employed to raise funds, the roofing work was completed in May 2001 and “we started to worship under a roofing structure.”
The pastor recalled that when he was inducted in January 2001, he said in his acceptance speech that “by the special grace of God, and as my Lord liveth we shall be under a roofing structure by the same time next year (2002).”
From the time the church was roofed to the time of its dedication, Akpan said “the financial strength of its members can only be experienced than imagined.”
“The development so far had become a reality through the commitment on the part of the leadership with dint of hard work on the part of the members that have transformed the virgin swampy forest which had never been inhabited by any human being to what we are seeing today,” he added.
He acknowledged the service and contributions of all “faithful brethren who had contributed meaningfully to making this church have a facelift by providing the necessary infrastructure…to extend the Lord’s kingdom to a vicinity we never knew will develop to what we are seeing today.”
Besides, he expressed appreciation to the congregation for building a mission house for the ministers so as to bring them (ministers) closer to the church members.
