A report by Beacon Intel has revealed that a total of 706 deaths and 302 abductions were recorded in some parts of the country in April 2023 with Borno, Benue and Kaduna states topping the list where the incidents occurred.
According to the report, the deaths and abductions affected 180 local government areas in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
It stated that a total of 277 Nigerians were killed during raids; 168 were killed by unknown factors, while 126 were killed by individual attacks.
However, 110 died during crossfire, 24 in ambush attacks and one in detention.
Geo-political statistics of fatalities showed that 195 (27.6%) occurred in the north central; 176 (24.9%) in the northwest; 146 (20.7%) in northeast; 85 (12.0%) in the southwest; 58 (8.2%) in the southeast and 46 (6.1%) in the south-south.
The north constituted 73.2% of the total fatalities for period in review.
The document revealed that the top three states with the highest number of deaths were Borno with 100 fatalities, Benue with 85 and Kaduna with 63.
For abductions, 139 (46.0%) incidents were recorded in the north central; 126 (41.7%) in the northwest; 14 (4.6%) in the south-south; 13 (4.3%) in the southwest and 5 (1.7%) apiece in the northeast and southeast.
The North constituted 89.4% of the total abductions for April 2023.
A comparison of the incidents that occurred in April 2022 and April 2023 showed a 20.4% decrease (480/382) in insecurity-related incidents generally.
The northeast recorded 70.2% decrease (151/45) in incidents.
On the other hand, there was a significant increase in the south-south geopolitical zone with 42/65 (54.7%) recorded incidents.
The north central recorded 76/85 (11%) increase; northwest, 73/55 (24.7%) decrease; southeast, 43/32 (25.6%) decrease and southwest, 95/100 (5.3%) increase.
