Justice Bassey Nkanang of the Akwa Ibom State High Court has sentenced Uduak Frank Akpan to death by hanging for the murder of a female job seeker, Iniubong Umoren.

However, the court discharged and acquitted the convict’s father, Frank Akpan and sister, Anwan Bassey (2nd and 3rd accused) who were standing trial for accessory after the fact to murder.

It was reported that Akpan attempted to escape shortly after the sentence was announced by the trial judge.

Recall that the late University of Uyo graduate of philosophy was declared missing in May 2021 after leaving home to meet Akpan over a potential job offer in Akwa Ibom and was found dead days later.

The Akwa Ibom police command arrested the convict following the discovery of the Umoren’s remains in a shallow grave at the backyard Akpan’s house.

Akpan later confessed in an interview with journalists in Uyo that he killed Umoren over a disagreement during sexual intercourse.

Subsequently, he was charged with rape and murder.
