The United Kingdom Parliament is set to commence a debate on the repatriation of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, from Kenya to Nigeria on Wednesday (today).
Kanu, who is also a British citizen, was arrested on Sunday, June 27 and extradited to Nigeria to face trial for alleged treason.
In a schedule posted on its website, the UK parliament said it will discuss “the circumstances surrounding the transfer of Mr. Kanu to Nigeria against his will”, among other issues.
According to the document, Lord Alton of Liverpool will be raising the issue at the House of Lords and will ask the British government on Kanu’s repatriation to Nigeria.
“To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of (1) the alleged role of the government of Kenya in the detention and alleged mistreatment of Nigerian activist Nnamadi Kanu, (2) the circumstances surrounding the transfer of Mr. Kanu to Nigeria against his will, and (3) of any assistance being provided to him by the high commission in Abuja,” the document reads.
The document also states that the question, tagged ‘HL1665’ was tabled on July 5, 2021 will be “due for answer” by the “relevant government department” by July 19, 2021.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has hailed the security agencies involved in the re-arrest and repatriation Kanu and the raid on the residence of Yoruba nation activist, Mr. Sunday Adeyemo, aka Igboho.
Spokesman for the president, Mr. Garba Shehu, said disclosed this in a statement entitled, ‘Presidency statement on the recent successes of security and intelligence agencies.’
“Last week, we saw the enhanced collaboration of the Nigerian law enforcement agencies, as they executed with great synchronisation arrests of individuals who had inflicted pain and hardships on fellow citizens.
“By this singular action of our security forces, sanity, calm and peace have been returned to our communities,” the president said.
