The deputy registrar, school registration at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mr. Henry Adewumi, said on Wednesday that President Muhammadu Buhari obtained a Cambridge University West African Examination certificate with five credits.
Adewumi disclosed this while testifying before the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja.
Buhari’s academic qualification has been one unending controversy since 2015.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the February 23 presidential election, Mr. Atiku Abubakar, had filed the petition before the tribunal to challenge the victory of Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election.
It would be recalled that Buhari had, on Tuesday, presented his West African School Examination certificate from Cambridge University to the tribunal.
Buhari made the submission through his counsel, Wole Olanipekun.
The certificate was admitted as evidence in the matter.
Presenting the certificate, a witness and chief of staff the president, Mr. Abba Kyari, told the tribunal that Buhari had five credits including in English in the examination.
He claimed to have known Buhari for nearly 40 years, told the tribunal that the president possessed requisite qualification to contest the February 23 presidential election.
According to him, Buhari has credit in five subjects, including English Language, in his West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE), conducted by the Cambridge University.
But under cross-examination by Dr. Levy Uzoukwu, Atiku’s lead counsel, Kyari told the tribunal that he personally received and signed for Buhari’s Cambridge University WASC Certificate on July 18, 2019.
The witness said Buhari, in his curriculum vitae (CV), listed the schools he attended but did not include any of the certificates obtained.
Further cross-examined by the plaintiff’s counsel Kyari admitted that the diploma certificate in Strategic Studies he claimed Buhari possessed in his witness’ statement was not listed in Buhari’s CV.
Another witness and retired civil servant, Mr. Sule Mai’Adua, said he attended the same secondary school with Buhari and that he took photographs with him while they were in class six.
He also told the tribunal that he wrote WASC examination in 1961 with Buhari and that Buhari has two certificates.
When asked to read the army’s statement that Buhari’s certificate was not in his personal file with the military, the witness said he was never in the army and did not know the position of the army.
However, he insisted that Buhari has two certificates.
