Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the kidnap of students from the Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State saying the action was taken to further the course of Islam.

In a recorded 4 minutes 28 seconds audio released on Monday night the leader of the dreaded jihadist group, Abubakar Shekau, said contrary to what was being reported, they were yet to make any demands.

HumAngle quotes Shekau as saying, “What happened in Katsina was done to promote Islam and discourage un-Islamic practices as Western education is not the type of education permitted by Allah and his Holy Prophet.

“They are also not teaching what Allah and his Holy Prophet commanded. They are rather destroying Islam. It may be subtle, but Allah the Lord of the skies and earths knows whatever is hidden. May Allah promote Islam. May we die as Muslims.

“In a nutshell, we are behind what happened in Katsina.”

It would be recalled the no fewer than 333 students, according to official figures, are still missing since the attack late Friday on the all-boys school.

The attack was initially blamed on armed groups locally known as “bandits”, who are active in the unstable northwest region where kidnappings for ransom are common.

More than 100 gunmen on motorcycles stormed the rural school north of Kankara town, forcing students to flee and hide in the surrounding bush.

A number of boys were able to escape, but many were captured, split into groups and taken away, residents told AFP.
